Roseland Recommends: Wintergirls

Ok, this one was supposed to be my "beach read", however, it was one that I couldn't put down! I use the novel Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, in a book bundle during third quarter to teach about looking within yourself for the truth, and Speak explores the world of teen rape and how one girl dealt with life her freshman year, by shutting down and NOT speaking after she was raped at a high school party.

Anyway, Speak is amazing and I was so excited to see what Laurie Halse Anderson had to offer with her new novel Wintergirls. She did not disappoint! This book was also amazing and touches on several topics like suicide, anorexia and bulimia, and cutting. I felt like I was trappped in this book the entire time I was reading it, and felt like I was going crazy, just like Lia, the main character. It brought me back to my high school days where I watched many friends go in and out of facilities to help them with their eating disorders.

I would love to use this book in the bundle next year, as it might be a little more powerful than Speak, not to mention a little bit easier to get through, but I will have to get it approved through the committee and then the board - so maybe in two years (and that is if the school has money to buy me more books). Either way, this one will be on my school bookshelf this year and I recommend it to anyone that takes their time to read it! You can even borrow mine if you would like! Happy Reading!
